Why How We Heal

Trauma can reach into nearly every part of a life.

It can leave us bracing for what might happen next, living with anxiety and
overwhelm, or carrying an exhaustion that sleep never seems to touch. It
can make closeness feel dangerous, rest feel impossible, and emotions
too much to hold.

It can shape how we love, how we protect ourselves, what we reach for or
avoid, and how much of a future we allow ourselves to imagine. It can
even alter our sense of meaning, purpose, and connection to something
larger than ourselves.

And yet we also carry an extraordinary capacity to recover, adapt, reconnect, and change.

How We Heal is a two day immersive experience devoted to what becomes possible when healing reaches beyond survival and begins to give more of our lives back

December 5–6, 2026

The Weekend Schedule

The weekend has been created as a journey. We will begin with the ways trauma can fragment
our experience across the body, psyche, relationships, and sense of meaning; move into the
processes that support recovery and resilience; and ultimately explore post-traumatic growth
and what can emerge as more of our energy becomes available for living fully.

Because healing is not only about what hurts less.

It can also be about what becomes available again: the ability to feel without being overwhelmed, to stay connected without losing ourselves, to experience pleasure and curiosity, to create, to belong, to imagine a future, and to participate more fully in the life that is here now.

For two days, we will come together to witness healing, experience it, and explore the extraordinary capacity within us to recover, grow, and become more fully available for our lives.

For therapists, practitioners, coaches, and healthcare professionals, the weekend is also an opportunity to deepen how you work with trauma by bringing a more holistic understanding of healing into the work you do with others—one that attends not only to the nervous system, but to the body, relationships, meaning, creativity, resilience, and the larger life your clients are trying to reclaim.

Saturday, December 5

9:00AM – 11:00AM

The Bio-Psycho-Spiritual Fragmentation of Trauma

Faculty

Dr. Arielle Schwartz
Dr. Arielle Schwartz
Dr. Scott Lyons
Dr. Scott Lyons

Trauma can affect many layers of human experience at once. Biologically, it can alter responses to safety, threat, sensation, and stress. Psychologically, it can influence memory, identity, emotion, and our sense of continuity. Relationally, it can shape trust, intimacy, boundaries, and belonging. For some, it can also affect meaning, hope, purpose, faith, and connection.

Arielle and Scott will explore how these dimensions interact, including how patterns can be carried through families and relationships and how trauma in one area can influence another. Through teaching and experiential practice, participants will begin exploring how these dimensions show up in their own lives, bodies, relationships, and work with others.

11:15AM – 12:30PM

Trauma Healing: The Wounds We Carry

Faculty

Dr. Peter Levine
Dr. Peter Levine

Trauma rarely belongs to a single moment or a single layer of our lives.

Peter Levine will explore how nervous system responses, relational experiences, generational patterns, and other dimensions of human experience can become intertwined over time.

He will then work directly with an audience participant, offering a rare opportunity to witness his approach to trauma healing as it unfolds.

Participants will observe how Peter follows the person's experience, what he notices in the body, how he responds to protective patterns, and how the process allows new possibilities to emerge.

Following the demonstration, Peter will discuss what happened, what informed his choices, and the principles guiding his work.

The session will close with discussion and Q&A.

Recovery can begin through many different doors.

This experiential session brings together somatic work, parts work, somatic EMDR, movement, breath, imagery, mindfulness, creativity, relationship, ritual, and meaning-making.

Faculty will explore how resourcing and relationship create the conditions for deeper work, how we can approach difficult experiences without overwhelming the system, and how patterns held in one area of experience can begin to shift through work in another.

Participants will experience practices that support greater awareness, flexibility, and connection while exploring the relationship between biology, psychology, embodiment, and meaning.

How do we rebuild meaning after experiences that have changed us?

This conversation explores dimensions of healing that do not always fit neatly inside a clinical framework: creativity, ritual, consciousness, spirituality, culture, community, and belonging.

Across cultures, these have long been part of how human beings have lived through suffering and change.

This gathering brings those traditions into dialogue with what we now understand about trauma, the body, psychology, and recovery.

Together, Peter, Arielle, and Scott will explore the many ways human beings have sought healing—not as a replacement for trauma recovery, but as part of the larger human experience of becoming whole.

The Embodied Foundations of Resilience

Faculty

Dr. Scott Lyons

Resilience is more than how much stress we can withstand. It grows through our ability to find support, recover after activation, stay connected to ourselves and other people during difficulty, and move through challenging experiences without losing access to choice.

Arielle and Scott will explore the embodied foundations that make this possible, including resourcing, co-regulation, grounding, boundaries, breath, the window of tolerance, and the ability to move between difficulty and what helps us feel supported and present. Through experiential practice, we'll explore resilience as something we can strengthen across the body, our relationships, and the way we meet our lives.

11:15AM – 12:30PM

The Biology of Resilience

A Teaching & Trauma Healing Demonstration with Dr. Peter Levine

Faculty

Dr. Peter Levine
Dr. Peter Levine

Peter will explore one of the central ideas of his life's work: that resilience is an innate biological capacity that can remain available to us even after overwhelming experiences.

Through teaching and a trauma healing demonstration with an audience participant, you'll witness how protective responses can shift, how the nervous system can regain flexibility, and how someone can begin to recover a sense of choice, connection, and aliveness. The session will close with discussion and Q&A.

Recovery can eventually open questions that survival left little room to ask: What matters to me now? What do I want my life to stand for? What parts of myself are ready to come back? In this extended final session, Arielle and Scott will explore how healing can move into repatterning, meaning-making, creativity, values, relationships, purpose, and contribution.

Through teaching, demonstrations, and experiential practice, we'll work with the possibility of loosening patterns and identities organized around what happened, reconnecting with strengths and desires that may have gone quiet, and discovering what we want to carry forward into our relationships, communities, and lives.

What participants have experienced

This was one of the best investments I have done.

I really felt a complete embodiment and modeling of the teachers and of all the speakers that were present during our learning experience. I come out of this course feeling much more present, much more connected to myself, and able to truly connect and relate to others and implement this in a personal and professional way. And this was one of the best investments I have done. I commend the staff and the program and how all of this was organized and put together, and I really want to thank the whole team at The Embody Lab for the work that they're doing.

Marielle

What I found was truly magical.

I came to The Embody Lab with the intention of deepening my knowledge of somatics and being able to apply it to myself and my clients, and what I found was truly magical. The quality and depth of the teachings really surprised me, and it was unlike anything I've encountered. I feel that The Embody Lab has created a safe container for learning, for experimenting, and has brought together really the most incredible, extraordinary pioneers in the field of somatics and trauma therapy.

You don't spend two days just reading and listening. You move, practice and engage.

I encourage you to take it live so you can benefit from the practice sessions with other students. It really helps you build confidence and know what you do well and what you need to learn better. When you spend a weekend live, you realize it's movement-oriented: you don't spend two days just reading and listening, you move, practice and engage.

It was life changing.

It was very intense, informative and educational, but more importantly, it was life changing. I feel so much more empowered to help myself and to help people heal, especially now in the times that we're living in. We all need some healing.

The Highlight

A Rare Opportunity to Experience Dr. Peter Levine’s Work Live

Across both days, Dr. Peter Levine will work live with audience members in two trauma-healing demonstrations.

There is a difference between learning about a therapeutic approach and witnessing an experienced practitioner follow the process as it unfolds.

Participants will have the opportunity to observe how Peter listens to the body, follows protective responses, works with sensation and movement, and creates conditions where new possibilities can emerge.

Following each demonstration, Peter will share his reflections on what he noticed, what guided his choices, and the principles underlying his work.

For Practitioners

A rare opportunity to observe one of the foundational figures in modern trauma healing working in real time.

For Personal Meaning

Another way to understand healing by witnessing the process itself.

Why How We Heal

Come Experience What Healing Can Be

There are experiences in life that change us. Healing does not require us to deny that, transcend it, or turn what happened into something it was not.

But we are also not finished becoming.

There is an extraordinary capacity within us to reorganize, reconnect, find meaning, and discover new ways of being in relationship with ourselves, with one another, and with the lives we are still creating.

For two days, we are bringing together some of the most important voices in trauma, somatic healing, psychology, creativity, and human resilience to create something that is meant to be experienced, not simply learned.

Come witness the work. Participate in it. Bring the questions you carry personally, the questions you hold in your work with others, or simply your curiosity about what helps human beings heal.

We would love to have you in the room with us.
