Witness the Art and Science of Somatic Trauma Healing

Trauma can reach into nearly every part of our lives. It can shape how we grieve, how safe we feel in relationships, and whether we experience connection, meaning, and belonging. These patterns often carry a history that words alone cannot fully express.

In this four-session workshop, Peter Levine draws on more than five decades of clinical work to explore grief, attachment trauma, spiritual disconnection, and complex trauma—and how the body’s natural capacities for recovery can be supported.

At the heart of each session is the opportunity to witness Peter working directly with someone, in real time. You’ll observe how he listens to subtle changes in breath, movement, and posture; when he slows down or follows an emerging movement; and how he works with the nervous system without forcing a particular outcome.

For practitioners, this is an opportunity to observe the sensitivity, clinical judgment, and moment-to-moment responsiveness that make somatic trauma work so nuanced. For those exploring their own healing, it offers a deeply human perspective on how protective patterns develop and how the possibility of change can begin to emerge through the body.

What You'll Learn and Experience

Through Peter's teaching and live sessions, you'll develop a deeper understanding of how trauma shapes the body and how Somatic Experiencing® can support recovery.

You'll have the opportunity to:

  • Recognize how trauma shapes the nervous system. Understand patterns of activation, shutdown, bracing, withdrawal, and other protective responses that influence emotions, relationships, and everyday life.
  • Observe Peter's clinical approach. See how he tracks sensation, movement, and subtle physiological changes, and how he determines when to intervene, slow down, or support an emerging response.
  • Deepen your understanding of somatic intervention. Explore the role of pacing, titration, pendulation, resources, and attunement in supporting the nervous system.
  • Understand how trauma affects different areas of life. Explore the physiological and relational dimensions of grief, attachment trauma, spirituality, and complex trauma.

What People Experience Learning From Peter Levine

Watching Peter work helped me understand aspects of Somatic Experiencing that are difficult to grasp through theory alone. His attention to the smallest shifts in the body, and the patience with which he follows them, changed how I think about pacing and supporting clients through trauma.
Dr AlexMinnesota
What stayed with me was how much care Peter brought to the experience of the person he was working with. I began to understand my own responses differently, with more compassion and less urgency to change them. It gave me a different sense of what healing through the body can look like.

I. Grief

Moving Through Loss — A Somatic Approach to Grief

Grief can change our energy, our relationships, and our sense of being at home in the world. When loss overwhelms our capacity to respond, the body may move into states of collapse, numbness, agitation, or withdrawal.

Peter explores how Somatic Experiencing® can support the grieving process through careful attention to the body's responses, helping people remain connected to loss without becoming overwhelmed.

You’ll explore

  • How grief and loss affect the nervous system
  • Recognizing overwhelm, collapse, numbness, and immobilization
  • Using pendulation to support movement between grief and available resources
  • Supporting emotional expression without forcing catharsis
  • Reconnecting with vitality and meaningful engagement while honoring loss
Nov 13Fri · 2:00–3:30 pm ET
II. Attachment Trauma

The Body in Relationship — Healing Attachment Trauma Somatically

Our earliest relationships shape how we experience closeness, safety, separation, and receiving care. When these experiences involve fear, neglect, or inconsistency, the body may develop protective patterns that continue to influence relationships long into adulthood.

Peter explores how attachment trauma shapes physiological responses to connection and how Somatic Experiencing® can support greater flexibility, regulation, and relational safety.

You’ll explore

  • How early attachment experiences shape nervous-system responses
  • Recognizing patterns of bracing, withdrawal, appeasement, and hypervigilance
  • Working with boundaries, proximity, and protective responses
  • Understanding the role of co-regulation and therapeutic attunement
  • Supporting greater flexibility and capacity for secure connection

III. Trauma & Spirituality

Trauma, the Body & Spirituality — Reclaiming Connection and Wholeness

Trauma can affect our relationship with meaning, purpose, belonging, and the larger experience of being alive. Spiritual experiences may offer important sources of resilience, but they can sometimes also become ways of moving away from pain that has not yet been integrated.

Peter explores how embodiment, nervous-system regulation, and spiritual experience intersect, and how deeper contact with the body can support presence, connection, and meaning.

You’ll explore

  • The relationship between trauma, embodiment, and spirituality
  • Distinguishing embodied presence from dissociation
  • Understanding spiritual bypassing in trauma healing
  • Exploring awe, meaning, belonging, and connection
  • Supporting integration between psychological healing, bodily experience, and spirituality

IV. Complex Trauma

Beyond Survival — Working with Complex Trauma Through the Body

Complex trauma can shape enduring patterns of activation, shutdown, dissociation, emotional overwhelm, and disconnection. These responses often develop through repeated or developmental experiences and require sensitivity to the ways the nervous system has adapted to survive.

Peter explores how Somatic Experiencing® approaches complex trauma through careful pacing, tracking, and attention to protective responses, supporting greater capacity without overwhelming the system.

You’ll explore

  • Recognizing hyperactivation, hypoactivation, freeze, and collapse
  • Understanding the effects of repeated and developmental trauma
  • Using titration, pacing, and resource development
  • Tracking defensive impulses, movement, and subtle physiological changes
  • Supporting greater regulation, agency, and relational capacity

See Peter Levine's Work in Action

Some of the most meaningful aspects of Somatic Experiencing® become clearer when you witness them.

Watch how Peter attends to the body's subtle responses, follows what emerges in the moment, and works with a person's experience at a pace their nervous system can manage.

This is the kind of attentive, responsive work you'll have the opportunity to witness throughout the workshop.
