The power of somatics to transform, to empower and change lives

In our recent Meet The Faculty session for the Somatic Attachment Therapy Certificate, Euphrasia spoke about the incredible transformation she’s seen in her clients since implementing Somatic Experiencing in her practice. Read her story of how somatics created transformation change in individuals and her whole community!

For me, Somatic Experiencing especially working with somatic therapy itself is wonderful therapy.

Before, you know, when I first arrived in Brazil, I was working with women who are violated in the community, suffered a lot of violence, and I used mental health programs, I used many different approaches to them.

But usually whenever they felt better.

But then they went back to the same situation.

Always.

Yeah, our centre which I co-founded, is called AFYA: Holistic Healing Centre. I go into the community and collect all of the women who are suffering from violence. And we keep them at the centre, we do all these therapies, different types and then after a while they all one by one, they all disappear and go back to the violent situation, you see.

So when I, then I start looking for, what else can I do? And in my searching, then I found Somatic Experiencing by Peter Levine. And I think this was the key. Honestly, it was amazing.

When I did one module only, you know, like the beginning level, when I came back I started attending like 15 people a day, women from the community and all of them having so much resolutions because Somatic Experiencing help us to connect with our body.

And, you know, when you connect with your body, that's all you have, you know. You can get ripped of everything you have - your house, your everything, but you have your body. And if you have your body, there is a power in you. It's powerful to have your own body and to be connected with it.

And, you know, when you connect with your body, that’s all you have, you know. You can get ripped of everything you have - your house, your everything, but you have your body. And if you have your body, there is a power in you. It’s powerful to have your own body and to be connected with it.

Not only to have it, but to be connected with it.

So, and from that, I think there was a transformation for me. And I just, I remember telling the teacher that I met at that time - I want to study this method and teach it throughout the world.

And I'm doing it today because I just thought this is a transformation for everybody.

Healing traumas, healing so many difficulties, empowering people because what happened after that - these women, wherever they went, they could say, “No!”, “Stop it!”, “No, this is not what I want.”, “I'm changing and get out of my way”,. You know what, they could just put boundaries, so many things.

They don’t need to create a wall or they don’t need to remain in the victim - but they just come out because they are empowered through  their body, in their nervous system, and their body and feel comfortable with who they are.

So with that - and they don't need to create a wall or they don't need to remain in the victim - but they just come out because they are empowered through  their body, in their nervous system, and their body and feel comfortable with who they are.

So, I mean, these are poor women. Many of them do not know how to read and write but just rising up, you know, from that. So, for me, this is a testimony of Somatic Experiencing and how to use it throughout the world.
