Explore the power of Somatic Attachment Therapy to heal relational wounds and deepen connection
Starting January 30th, 2022, The Embody Lab launches a first-of-its-kind 60-hr Somatic Attachment Therapy Certificate. This program brings together world renowned somatic attachment therapy teachers to offer a holistic, body-centered method to healing relational wounds and trauma. This extraordinary program offers a collection of practical tools that guides the healing process for yourself and your work with others.
In a recent interview Dr Scott Lyons answers some commonly asked questions about this program and what makes it unique.
Is this program meant to be a self-healing journey or a program for practitioners?
Our intention for this program is that it's educational and inspirational primarily to become a somatic practitioner, and to work with the tools that are being offered in somatic attachment therapy. So it's a bit more geared towards being a practitioner. Being a practitioner does not mean you have to be a the therapist. It might be that you're working with the tools as a parent, as a teacher, as a coach, as a therapist. However, it is that you would like to be inspired to use these amazingly significant tools of somatic attachment therapy.
If you're desiring to do this program primarily for your own journey, that is okay. We just really want to acknowledge and recognize this is not going to be a setting where you have a therapeutic process with a lot of feedback. This means that if you are going through this program for your own process and journey then we encourage you to have a therapist and a group of friends so that you have the support to process the material outside of the program. When we journey into a program where we're going to be navigating the material through our own body, then we're going to have our own healing. That's part of it. But even in our own healing process to become practitioners of somatic attachment therapy, the primary focus of the program is to utilize this work in the world.
I’m not a licensed practitioner. Can I still participate in this program?
Another question we’re frequently asked is “I’m not a licensed practitioner. Do I qualify to do this program?”
Scott’s answer to this is yes! We all have relationships in so many of our professions, whether we're working in organizations, or working as a teacher or as a parent or a family member. Regardless of your profession or prior qualifications, when we are in relationship with others we are dedicated to navigating, mending, and enhancing relational connection. Scott also reinforces that the tools that are offered in this program are accessible, so no matter what your background is, these tools are accessible because we have bodies - because we are all embodied beings.
Scott says that these incredible profound tools are available to us. No matter what our profession is.
Is this program more theory-based or experiential?
Scott is often asked if this program is primarily theoretical or conceptual, or is it more practical and experiential? Scott tells us that because it's a body base or embodied program, there is a significant emphasis on the practicalities, the experience of it.
Scott says that phase one of the program will start with theory. Phase two, three, and four will see us move into more experiential practices, techniques, skill building - and Scott says us that this is a priority in this type of program. You'll always have reference points and slides to help give you a clear understanding of where and why we're going into the experiential practices and the techniques of why and what we're doing. So you'll experience a beautiful pairing of understanding and experience. This pairing is what makes the most skilful practitioners.
What are the program requirements for the certificate program?
The program does require 20 hours of at home “homework”. Though Scott says that homework's not quite the right word. It’s better described as 20 hours where you are encouraged to continue to embody and practice the techniques that will be given as part of the Certificate Program.
You'll be given specific exercises to work on at home with other people, or with other participants in the program. And it comes up to about an hour, a week of homework. So it's not too bad at all, and we're not actually checking it. When you send it in, you just check a box that you've done.
It’s essentially an honor system because we believe that this is the minimum amount of hours that you need to really further your embodiment of the tools, and really be able to feel at home in applying them after the program.
