WHAT IS COGNITIVE BEHAVIORAL THERAPY (CBT)?

“Watch your thoughts, they become words. Watch your words, they become actions. Watch your actions, they become habits. Watch your habits, they become your character. Watch your character, it becomes your destiny.”

— UNKNOWN AUTHOR

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a dynamic psychology-based personal growth discipline that offers thought-provoking insights into the relationship between emotions, habits, perceptions, attitudes, and behaviors. CBT is a powerful therapeutic method that has enabled countless individuals to regain control of their lives and attain emotional well-being. Whether dealing with anxiety, depression, stress, or other life challenges, CBT provides practical tools and strategies to empower and support healing and transformation.

CBT practitioners use illuminating questions, revealing exercises, and powerful reflections to enhance awareness of what is happening and how it’s happening in the individual.  The primary goal is to change negative thought patterns and behaviors to improve emotional regulation and develop coping strategies. It aims to empower the client, enhance awareness, and provide tools for individuals to manage their challenges actively.

This program draws on techniques from the three waves of CBT, as well as related CBT modalities such as Dialectal behavioral therapy (DBT), Change Theory / Psychology, Motivational- Interviewing (MI), Rational emotive behavior therapy (REBT), Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), and Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT).

Join us and discover the power of a unified somatic approach to CBT therapy to create lasting healing and change for yourself and your clients. Register now and get ready to transform your practice and your clients' lives.

SOMATICS HELP HEAL

‘Soma’ is a Greek word for ‘the living body known from within. This ‘knowing’ signifies wholeness, liberation, and empowered connection (feeling) and action. Somatic Therapy is an experiential approach toward mind-body integration. The pain, overwhelm, and coping responses manifested by trauma take us away from feeling at home in our bodies. As a result, there is often a split within ourselves, creating challenges in emotional processing, focus, relationships (and intimacy), decision-making, and self-regulation.

Somatic Therapy helps:

  • Deepen awareness and enhance the ability to listen and be in relation to the body's primal processes.

  • Restore the body as a place of safety while helping to expand the capacity to process body (preverbal and nonverbal) memory.

  • Relieve unattended symptoms/signals emerging from the body (i.e., pain, anxiety, muscle tension, depression, etc.).

  • Metabolize unprocessed emotions.

  • Complete thwarted (incomplete) stress responses.

  • Restore our optimal relationship with ourselves and the world around us.

This program draws on body-based practices and somatic psychotherapy modalities, such as Gestalt, Hakomi, Sensorimotor Psychotherapy, Body-Mind Centering, and Somatic Experiencing, to enhance the depth and processing of CBT's core structure and tools.

WHAT IS SOMATIC CBT?

Somatic CBT is a holistic modality that incorporates body (somatic, emotions, implicit memory, etc.), behavior, mind, and environment influences to address each needed component for transformation and lasting, impactful change.

In Somatic CBT you will learn to:

  • Enhances awareness, attentional flexibility, focus, body-fulness, and mindfulness

  • Identify patterns in cognition, behaviors, emotions, and relational interactions.

  • Deepen somatic connection to create more agency and choice.

  • Create more presence, flexibility, and adaptability in thoughts, perceptions, and actions.

  • Facilitate processing, skill-building, and interventions

  • Utilizes strategies and purpose-driven tools for powerful and lasting changes.

In this approach, CBT brings more structure, action, and problem-solving to the life-changing work of somatics, and body-based interventions (somatics) bring more depth, relationality, meaning-making, processing, and inclusivity of the subjective experience into CBT—radically improving the effectiveness and outcomes of the session.

The holistic perspective of Somatic CBT recognizes that the entry point into transformation and change can be through any access points (somatic, cognitive, behavior, and environmental) while understanding and applying the intersectional and interception between each of them, allowing practitioners and clients to processes and relieve the core material and the habituated beliefs, perceptions, and behaviors.

KEY PRINCIPLES OF SOMATIC CBT

1. Mind-Body Integration

Somatic CBT recognizes and utilizes the bidirectional relationship between thoughts, emotions, behaviors, the environment, and bodily sensations in working with all aspects of experience.

2. Embodied Awareness

Cultivating present-moment awareness of bodily sensations, movements, and felt experiences as a pathway to self-understanding, self-regulation, and depth processing.

3. Humanistic Transformation

In Somatic CBT, the processes of change includes relationship, respect, empathy, opportunity, agency, and safe, nonjudgmental exploration. A somatic CBT practitioner actively works to unshame the processes of healing and transformation.

4. Honoring the processes of Cognitive, Behavioral, and Somatic Restructuring

Honoring the need for each client's particular formation of behavioral patterns and cognitive strategies while still learning to Identify and challenge unhelpful thought patterns, behaviors, reflexive body responses, and beliefs using respectful techniques that reflect, engage, interrupt oldpatterns, and offer new choices.

5. Experiential Learning

In Somatic CBT, practitioners engage in experiential exercises and practices that facilitate embodied insights, agency, skills, and lasting change rather than solely relying on cognitive understanding.

6. Build Pathways for Change

Through somatic CBT, we illuminate stuckness (habits), process and metabolize it to re-establish choices and build pathways toward change. We never force awareness, processing, or change—transformation emerges from laying the foundation of safety, building resources, building skills & support, and exploration.

7. Inclusive of difference

In Somatic CBT, the practitioner adapts their skills and tools to meet the person they are with. This includes being attuned to the environmental factors that shape and influence behavior, including social, political, and cultural contexts.

8. Trauma-Informed

Somatic CBT integrates the wisdom of body-based trauma healing and nervous system science in order to move at the pace of embodied trust. By locating trauma narratives, painful self-perceptions, and limiting beliefs within the individual’s somatic experience, the practitioner is able to simultaneously honor and disarm so-called thought distortions as a powerful expression of the body’s capacity to defend itself and move towards life. In this way, Somatic CBT is able to integrate resistance, attune to traumatic wounding, and move towards transformation in a de-shaming and empowering way.

The somatic cognitive behavioral triangle focuses on the intersection of the body, thoughts (cognition), feelings, behaviors, and the environment and how healing/ changing one can impact the other elements.

“Healing is never complete until we have been truly heard. May the universe send you someone who will sincerely care to listen.”

- ANTHON ST. MAARTEN

“Healing is like an onion. As you process through one layer of trauma to release the pain and heal, a new layer will surface. One layer after another layer will bring up new issues to focus on. Pace yourself. Only focus on one layer at a time.”

- DANA ARCURI

“The body stores the trauma of our lives in muscular rigidity, thereby keeping us stuck in the past. When we release the tension in the body and align ourselves with gravity, we take a new stand in life. This allows us to be at ease with ourselves and in harmony in our relationship to others and to our planet.”

- JOSEPH HELLER

“Sometimes the people around you won't understand your journey. They don't need to, it's not for them.”

-  JOUBERT BOTHA
