ABOUT THE CERTIFICATE

Are you a facilitator, relationship therapist, coach, or group worker? Are you looking for a strong foundation in conflict resolution skills that incorporates the body, trauma awareness, and anti-oppression?

Join Kai Cheng Thom, MSc, Qualified Mediator, and professional somatic coach for Embodied Conflict Resolution. This course is a deep dive into the conceptual frameworks, process structures, and practical embodiment and conversational skills that are needed for trauma-informed, anti-oppressive conflict management and transformation in community and organizational settings.

Based on Kai Cheng’s Loving Justice conflict transformation model, this course will explore conflict transformation through an embodiment lens – exploring the intrapersonal, interpersonal, and social levels through which conflict occurs. We will introduce tools for distress tolerance and emotional regulation, as well as group depolarization and perspective-taking.

Participants can expect to leave the course with:

  • A strong theoretical and practical knowledge of the ways that conflict impacts the nervous system
  • Skills for self-soothing and embodying values in conflict situations
  • A strong understanding of the Loving Justice model of the meta-skills and micro-skills needed for interpersonal conflict engagement
  • Basic knowledge of the difference between collaborative and competitive conflict resolution processes, and
  • A grasp of basic techniques for conflict resolution in group settings.
  • The political context of police and prison abolitionism and Restorative and Transformative Justice, from which many aspects of Kai Cheng’s Loving Justice Model is derived, will be interwoven throughout the class.

Participants should expect to engage with political perspectives that may be very different from their own, including potentially triggering comments from other participants.

As conflict resolution practice requires practitioners to develop a high capacity for navigating charged emotional content, a greater level of tolerance for disagreement and conflicting ideologies will be expected of all students.

PLEASE NOTE: This is an in-depth program that goes beyond entry-level material, and a non-triggering space cannot be guaranteed.
