Why the world needs somatic approaches to healing
This September The Embody Lab launches a first-of-its-kind 60-hr Integrative Somatic Trauma Therapy Certificate to learn the healing power of somatic therapy with the world's leaders in trauma healing and recovery.
We recently asked our Co-Directors - Dr Arielle Schwartz, Nkem Ndefo, and Dr Scott Lyons - to share with us their “why” for the program - why the world needs this unique approach to healing trauma and turning pain into growth, meaning and resilience and, why they came together to create this transformative program.
As Dr Arielle Schwartz says, “The Embody Lab’s Somatic Trauma Therapy program is unique. We have brought together the world’s leading somatic trauma experts in one program to dive deeply into a transformative approach to trauma therapy. As the name suggests our approach is truly integrative - we’ve brought the faculty together in such a way that there is an arc and a structure to the program and you’ll leave with a variety of tools and techniques to support trauma healing for the people you serve and your community”.
Dr Scott Lyons says that the cloud of trauma is pervasive. It’s in our homes, our communities, our schools. It’s in our politics, our systems and structures… and it’s in our bodies. For Scott this is a driving “why” behind the development of this program. And it's not just for therapists - it's for anyone who wants to bring a more trauma-informed lens to their work and their communities.

As Nkem Ndefo so eloquently reminds us, trauma is more than a single event. It disrupts and overwhelms our ability to adapt, to connect, to flourish. The symptoms aren’t always felt immediately; they often emerge over time—hijacking thoughts and behavior, damaging relationships, undermining health, stealing the future.
We can’t afford to let trauma steal anything more from us. This is why we’ve created the Integrative Somatic Trauma Therapy Certificate. We need all of us healing trauma together to reclaim the freedom, vitality, and love that is our birthright.
